WWF-Guianas hosted the third working group session for the BIODEV 2030-Phase 2 Project in Suriname. On October 2, 19 stakeholders came together to focus on Supporting Sustainable Fisheries through Public Sector Reform in Suriname.

At this highly engaging one-day session that was supported by the national partners of the BIODEV project, namely the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries (LVV), and the Ministry of Oil, Gas and Environment (OGM), participants discussed details on the selected project ideas from the second working group, held at the end of August. They also discussed the planned Regional Technical Exchange and the BIODEV closing event, which will take place in the first week of December 2025.

The third working group session gave rise to thought-provoking discussions surrounding Operational Technology Prioritization Results and Strategic Technology Architecture Preferences. The presentations at the end of this session gave clear insights into the steps Suriname needs to take to achieve a sustainable fishing sector.

The highly informative third working group session also provided information that will be utilised in the upcoming Regional Technical Exchange, scheduled to take place at the end of October.  This highly anticipated meeting between Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana aims to bring together representatives from fisheries and biodiversity management, academia, and fisherfolk to share experiences, best practices, and innovative approaches for integrating biodiversity considerations into policy and fisheries management.

Importantly, under Phase 2 of the BIODEV project, WWF aims to strengthen regional partnerships through this collaborative effort, enabling countries to collectively address transboundary issues and work towards a sustainable fishing sector that benefits all involved nations
