(English below)

Firefighting crews and institutions strengthen their preparedness for wildfires in the Pantanal

Puerto Suárez, August 2026. Strengthening preparedness before an emergency occurs is key to responding to wildfires more quickly. With this goal in mind, firefighters, government authorities, security forces, risk management units and conservation organizations took part in the 1st Meeting of Firefighting Crews and Institutions of the Pantanal, held on August 21 and 22 in Puerto Suárez.

The meeting was organized by the Fundación Boliviana para el Desarrollo Social (FUNDESOC), with support from WWF-Bolivia and in coordination with the Government of Santa Cruz, through the Sub-Governor's Office of Germán Busch Province and the Directorate of Natural Resources (DIRENA). Participants also included the Germán Busch Continuing Education Center, Otuquis National Park and Integrated Management Natural Area, the Risk Management Units of El Carmen Rivero Tórrez, Puerto Suárez and Puerto Quijarro, as well as the Bolivian Air Force, the Fifth Naval District of Santa Cruz, the 6th Castrillo Cavalry Regiment and the Bolivian Police Fire Department. The activity also brought together the Saviors Pantanal firefighters and the volunteer fire brigades of Motacusito, Yacuces and San Salvador. During the opening ceremony, the sub-governor of Germán Busch Province, Luis Delgadillo, highlighted the support of both organizations: “I am grateful for the essential support of FUNDESOC and WWF in making this event possible”.

This effort is especially relevant given a climate outlook that could heighten risk conditions. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reported that a strong El Niño episode is developing in 2026, which may alter precipitation patterns and favor above-normal temperatures in different regions. These changes can create drier, warmer conditions that increase the flammability of vegetation and help fire spread.

Against this backdrop, the meeting combined technical knowledge, the exchange of experiences and hands-on exercises. The first day covered topics such as the context and conservation of the Pantanal's strategic ecosystems, integrated fire management and fire prevention, community leadership and the strengthening of brigades, as well as the initial handling of wildlife during fires, with both a theoretical and a practical component.

The second day focused on strengthening response capacity. Participants learned about Incident Command System (ICS) tools, reviewed the protection, control and surveillance work carried out in Otuquis National Park and Integrated Management Natural Area and the handling of incidents within the protected area, and then took part in a joint field exercise.

The meeting helped strengthen ties among those who play a fundamental role in preventing and responding to emergencies in the Pantanal. Coordination between institutions and firefighting crews aims to contribute to a more organized response to fire and, in doing so, to the protection of the forests, biodiversity and communities of this region.
