Sustainable fisheries: New developments for sustainable use of peruvian Mahi Mahi
- The Peruvian Mahi Mahi Alliance of the fishing industry, in collaboration with WWF and PromPerú, presents the new results of initiatives for the fisheries sustainable development.
- The presentation was made on March 12 at the Seafood Expo in the United States, the most important seafood event in the Americas, as part of the activities of the For The Fisheries Project, which seeks to promote responsible fishing practices in Peru and Ecuador.
With the purpose of promoting initiatives that strengthen the sustainable Peruvian Mahi Mahi fishery and offering a perspective on the opportunities and challenges facing the second largest artisanal fishing in Peru, the Peru Mahi Alliance (PMA) announced the progress of the scientific research actions that it has been promoting in partnership with IMARPE and WWF.
The presentation was made at the Seafood Expo North America 2023 in coordination with PromPerú, in the city of Boston, United States, recognized as the most important seafood event in North America.
With the title "Promoting scientific research for the sustainability of the Peruvian Mahi Mahi", Michael Mc Gregor, current president of the PMA, showed the latest scientific results of the initiatives that promote the research of the resource and its fishery, within the framework of the Mahi Mahi Fishery Improvement Project (FIP).
Collaborative work for more and better fisheries information
One of the main institutions with which PMA has been working is the Institute of the Sea of Peru (IMARPE), promoting information registration projects to enhance scientific studies of the resource. It has been possible to continue with the implementation of the Sample Donation Program, which has delivered more than 220 pieces of Mahi Mahi to the Functional Area of Transzonal and Highly Migratory Resources of IMARPE, to support the biological and genetic studies of the resource.
This program also contributed to the publication of the Mahi Mahi fishery indicator bulletins that analyse some fishing and reproductive aspects of the species every month. In addition, these Mahi mahi samples for biological and geunetic analysis, contribute to the Regional Stock Assessment led by Dr. Rubén Roa with the participation of IMARPE and the Public Institute for Aquaculture and Fisheries Research (IPIAP).
Another important result was the support for the second pilot phase implementation of the remote electronic monitoring (REM) program with on-board cameras and electronic log "TrazApp" on board the artisanal vessels in Paita, Piura and Matarani, Arequipa in the 2022-2023 season. In this second pilot, more than 30 fishing trips were recorded, almost tripling the number of trips of the 2021-2022 season. The objective is to gather information for the construction of a database validated by IMARPE that contributes to strengthening assessments of the resource and its fishery, especially in bycatch issues.
Mahi mahi fishery: better trained and more articulated
Another important milestone is PMA's support to the National Fund for Fisheries Development (FONDEPES) in the execution of the first course on "Training in good practices of handling and releasing sea turtles" aimed at extension workers and trainers from FONDEPES, IMARPE, SANIPES, PRODUCE and the UNP. The course was organized in coordination with FONDEPES, WWF Peru, ProDelphinus, PMA and the Scientific University of the South and certified 23 instructors who will be able to officially train and certify artisanal fishermen of the Mahi mahi spinel fishery ingood practices of handling and releasing sea turtles within the framework of the Regulation of Fisheries Management of the Mahi mahi (ROP).
Finally, PMA has been participating in discussion spaces to promote the sustainable management of the Mahi mahi fishery at the regional level. In 2022, they joined to the Regional Committee of Mahi Producers and Processors (COREMAHI) and the "Binational Committee for the Sustainability of Mahi Mahi", spaces in which coordinated management is promoted among the main Mahi mahi producing countries of the Eastern Pacific through science and governance.
This presentation at the Seafood Expo North America 2023 was made within the framework of the For The Fisheries project, which seeks to reduce illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, as well as promote responsible and sustainable fishing practices in Peru and Ecuador. The event was led by the Peru Mahi Alliance with the support of WWF PERU, and the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Walton Family Foundation (WFF).
ABOUT THE PERU MAHI ALLIANCE
The PMA is an Mahi mahi processing and exporting companies alliance that was born in 2019 in order to achieve sustainability and obtain MSC certification for the fishery. In collaboration with WWF and the Peruvian government, PMA works to implement programs that contribute to fulfilling the activities described in the FIP, such as the sample donation program to IMARPE for the biological and genetic studies developed by the institution.
Currently, the PMA is made up of 12 companies, including Coinrefri, Seafrost, Altamar, Mai Shi Group, PRODUPESCA, Fisholg, Spring Valley Fruit, Sercosta, Ocean Seafood, among others.
ABOUT SEAFOOD EXPO NORTH AMERICA
Seafood Expo North America is the most recognized fair in the American continent within the seafood sector, which takes place annually in the city of Boston (Massachusetts), United States.
The event shows the new launches of fishery products, novelties in machinery among others, of the participating companies. In 2022, the Peru Mahi Alliance (PMA) was launched during the Seafood Expo North America, which brought together the main buyers of mahi mahi from the United States and other stakeholders in the industry.
The United States of America is the main destination market for frozen products of the Peruvian Mahi mahi. This country has a special interest inimplementing policies for the responsible supply of fishery resources, so it seeks to ensure that the raw material of the products they import comes from sustainable sources. The Peruvian fishery aspires to align itself with international sustainability standardssuch as the MSC in order to continue supplying this type of demanding markets.
