PRODUCE and WWF commit on working together to promote the sustainability of fishing and aquaculture industries

Lima, August 13, 2019. – The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) and WWF Perú, signed a 2 year agreement to promote the sustainability of the fishing and aquaculture industries throughout the exchange of information, joint research activities, technical assistance and the coordination of iniciatives in favor of these 2 industries.
 

This alliance will strengthen the activities focused on the prevention and reduction of illegal fishing, encourage the sustainability of hydrobiological resources and contribute to the reduction of bycatch, protecting species such as sea turtles, cetaceans and birds.
 

“This alliance with WWF Perú will allow our institutions to develop joint activities in many areas involving fisheries and aquaculture policies, with the porpuse of strenghening the prevention and the fight against illegal fishing, the sustainbility of hydrobiological resources and it will contribute to the reduction of bycatch, , protecting species such as sea turtles, cetaceans and birds”, commented Maria del Carmen Abregu, the Vice-Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture.
 

She added that this agreement will be very useful for artisanal and industrial fishing operators as well as for small, medium and large-scale fish farmers with limited resources.
 

In this regard, Kurt Holle, the Country Representative of WWF Perú, emphasized that the agreement contributes to the collaborative work of his institution with the authorities, companies, civil society and fishermen, to encourage the development of the fishing sector and to ensure the sustainability of the activities, as well as the conservation of the marine ecosystem. Among the opportunities for collaborative work, there are additional ones, such as promoting the use of technology and innovation to ensure the traceability of hydrobiological resources.
 

Holle pointed out that “to achieve this goal, it is important that all the actors involved participate actively , this is why we will strengthen and mantain spaces for dialogue and communication, such as the Forum for Sustaible Fisheries and Aquaculture, in order to gather the perspectives and different points of views of each one involved in this activity”.
